TOP 5 HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS FOR MEN

top 5 hair loss treatments for men

The Best Male Hair Loss Treatment Options

Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is a common condition characterised by a receding hairline and thinning of hair on the crown of the head. It's the most common type of hair loss in men and is typically influenced by genetics and hormonal factors.

There is no cure for male pattern baldness, but there are some treatments that can help reduce the rate of hair fall, and promote the function of healthy hair growth. When it comes to treating hair loss, the earlier you act, the more hair you'll keep.

Effective treatments for male pattern baldness are limited, but here are five treatments (non-surgical) that can help stop hair loss, and help retain the hair you have, over a long period of time.

Finasteride/Dutasteride

Finasteride is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of male pattern baldness. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that contributes to hair loss by shrinking hair follicles over time.

Clinical studies have shown that finasteride is effective in slowing down hair loss and promoting hair regrowth in men with male pattern baldness. It can help to maintain existing hair and potentially regrow hair in some areas of the scalp.

Finasteride is typically taken orally in the form of a pill, usually once a day. It's important to note that results may take several months to become noticeable, and continuous treatment is necessary to maintain any significant results.

While finasteride is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects in some individuals. The most common side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased ejaculate volume. These side effects are usually reversible upon discontinuation of the medication, but it's essential to discuss any concerns with a healthcare provider.

There has been some debate and controversy surrounding the safety of finasteride, particularly regarding its potential long-term effects on sexual function and mental health, therefore caution is strongly advised.

Before starting finasteride or any other medication for male pattern baldness, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider, such as a dermatologist or primary care physician. They can assess your individual case, discuss potential risks and benefits, and help you make an informed decision about treatment.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is another FDA-approved medication for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Unlike finasteride, which works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), minoxidil works differently. It's a topical solution that is applied directly to the scalp, and its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood. However, it is believed to promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp and stimulating hair follicles.

Minoxidil has been shown to be effective in promoting hair growth and slowing down hair loss in men with male pattern baldness. It is particularly useful for stimulating hair regrowth in areas where the hair has become thin or has started to recede.

Minoxidil is available in various formulations, including solutions and foams, and is typically applied directly to the scalp twice daily. It's important to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer or healthcare provider for proper application and dosage.

Like finasteride, minoxidil requires continuous use to maintain any hair regrowth achieved. It may take several months of regular use before results become noticeable, and stopping treatment can lead to a return of hair loss.

Minoxidil is generally well-tolerated when used as directed, but some individuals may experience side effects. Common side effects may include scalp irritation, itching, and dryness. In rare cases, minoxidil may cause more severe side effects such as unwanted facial hair growth or rapid heartbeat. If you experience any concerning side effects, it's essential to discontinue use and consult with a healthcare provider.

Overall, minoxidil is a widely used and effective treatment option for male pattern baldness, particularly for individuals who prefer a topical solution or cannot tolerate the side effects of oral medications like finasteride. As with any medication, it's important to use minoxidil as directed and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication that has also been found to have potential benefits for treating male pattern baldness. While its primary use is in treating fungal infections of the skin, scalp, and nails, ketoconazole has been investigated for its secondary effects on hair growth.

Ketoconazole has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce scalp inflammation, which is believed to play a role in male pattern baldness. Additionally, it has antifungal properties that can help combat scalp conditions such as dandruff, which may contribute to hair loss.

Ketoconazole is available in topical formulations, including shampoos (Nizoral) and creams, that can be applied directly to the scalp. Ketoconazole shampoo is commonly used to treat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, but some studies suggest that it may also help promote hair growth and reduce hair loss in individuals with male pattern baldness.

While some studies have suggested that ketoconazole may have potential benefits for hair growth in individuals with male pattern baldness, the evidence is limited and further research is needed to confirm its efficacy.

Ketoconazole shampoos are typically used a few times per week, but frequency may vary depending on the specific product and individual needs. It's also essential to be aware of any potential side effects or interactions with other medications.

Overall, while ketoconazole may have potential benefits for treating male pattern baldness, it's not considered a primary treatment option, and more research is needed to fully understand its effects on hair growth. As always, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment for hair loss.

Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF)

Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), also known as fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7), is a protein that plays a role in the growth and maintenance of epithelial tissues, including the skin and hair follicles. While KGF has been investigated for its potential therapeutic effects on hair growth, particularly in the context of male pattern baldness, research in this area is still in the early stages, and its effectiveness for treating hair loss is not yet well-established.

KGF is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival in epithelial tissues. In the context of hair follicles, KGF is thought to stimulate the growth and differentiation of keratinocytes, the main cells that make up the outer layer of the skin and hair.

Preclinical studies and early clinical trials have shown that KGF may have potential benefits for promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss in individuals with male pattern baldness. KGF may work by stimulating the proliferation of hair follicle stem cells and promoting the growth of new hair shafts.

KGF is typically administered through topical application directly to the scalp or as an injectable formulation. The exact method of administration and dosage may vary depending on the specific formulation and protocol used in clinical studies.

While early studies have shown promising results, the clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness of KGF for treating male pattern baldness is still limited. Larger, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to further evaluate its safety and efficacy in a broader population of individuals with hair loss.

As with any therapeutic agent, there may be potential side effects associated with the use of KGF, although the specific side effect profile is not well-established. Common side effects may include scalp irritation, redness, or itching at the site of application.

In summary, while KGF shows promise as a potential treatment for male pattern baldness based on preclinical and early clinical studies, more research is needed to establish its safety and efficacy in larger clinical trials. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider before considering any experimental or investigational treatments for hair loss.

HR23+ Specialist Hair Supplement

HR23+ is a specialist hair supplement marketed as a solution for promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss. It contains a combination of vitamins, minerals, and potent herbal extracts that are purported to support hair health and stimulate hair growth.

HR23+ typically contains a variety of ingredients that are believed to support hair health and growth. These include vitamins such as biotin (B7), vitamin E, and vitamin D, minerals such as zinc and iron, as well as herbal extracts like saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and horsetail extract. These ingredients are often chosen for their potential roles in hair growth and maintenance.

The ingredients in HR23+ are purported to work through various mechanisms to support hair growth. For example, B7 is believed to play a role in the production of keratin, a protein that forms the structure of hair. Saw palmetto is thought to inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone implicated in male pattern baldness.

Dietary supplements like HR23+ are not regulated as strictly as pharmaceutical drugs, which means their safety and efficacy may not be as well-established. While many of the ingredients in HR23+ are generally considered safe when taken as directed, there is a risk of side effects or interactions with other medications. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

Some individuals may choose to use HR23+ or similar supplements as part of a comprehensive approach to promoting hair health, along with other treatments such as minoxidil. Many men take HR23+ as a safe alternative to harsh medications like finasteride.

A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE HAIR LOSS TREATMENT PLAN FOR MEN

highly effective hair loss treatment plan for men

A Highly Effective Hair Loss Treatment Plan for Men

If you are experiencing early stages of male pattern baldness, then fear not, because it can be treated. Hair loss can be minimised, and healthy hair growth can be maintained, by using a specific hair loss treatment plan.

This hair loss treatment plan will not cure baldness, but it is effective for men who are going through the initial stages of hair loss.

The treatments used in this plan are:

Minoxidil Topical Solution 5%
Nizoral Shampoo
Derma Roller
HR23+ Supplement

Minoxidil Topical Foam 5% Solution

Minoxidil is a topical solution for hair loss. It is particularly effective for reducing thinning hair on the crown region of the scalp, but it can also be effective when used in conjunction with a micro needling device.

minoxidil hair loss treatment for men

Minoxidil is available to purchase online, or from local pharmacies. Here's an example of some minoxidil brands https://www.minoxidil-direct.com/. If money is an issue, then go for the cheapest brand. All minoxidil is the same.

Go for the foam rather than the liquid, as it dries instantly, and doesn't make the hair greasy. Start off with applying once a day, maybe before you go to bed. Initial shedding may occur, but this is normal, as the hairs are entering a new growth cycle.

Ketoconazole shampoo (Nizoral) 2%

Ketoconazole is primarily used for treating dandruff, but is has been found to help reduce hair loss and encourage hair growth, particularly when used alongside minoxidil.

Ketoconazole shampoo for men Nizoral

Nizoral shampoo is very cheap to buy, and is also available online - Amazon is a good place to find it. Remember, ketoconazole is a potent solution that can come with minor side-effects, so just use the Nizoral shampoo once a week, that's it.

Micro needling (derma roller)

Micro needling with a derma roller or derma stamp is an effective way to stmulate hair growth. Micro needling wounds the skin, and as the wounds repair, it produces protein and collagen, which in turn, helps stimulates hair growth. Derma rolling is particularly effective for fixing a receding hairline.

Buy a cheap derma roller (1.5mm) and roll along the hairline once a week. Do not use minoxidil on the same day as you derma roll.

HOW TO REGROW THINNING HAIR: OPTIONS & TREATMENTS

best male hair loss treatment options

What are the best hair loss treatment options for men?

Male hair loss is prominent, but the treatments available are quite limited, despite how far science has come in recent years. There are thousands of products on the market that make far fetched claims, but in reality, most of them do not work.

So, how many options are there, and what are the best hair loss treatments for men on the market? In this article, we'll go through the only options and treatments that can help prevent thinning hair, and support the healthy function of hair growth.

Medical Treatments for Hair loss

What are they? There are currently only two types of medically approved treatments for hair loss, and they are:

  • Finasteride, sold under the brand names Proscar and Propecia among others, is a medication used to treat hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia in men. It can also be used to treat excessive hair growth in women and as a part of hormone therapy for transgender women. It is taken by mouth.
  • Minoxidil, sold under the brand name Regaine/Rogaine among others, is a medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure and pattern hair loss. It is an antihypertensive vasodilator. It is available as a generic medication by prescription in oral tablet form and over the counter as a topical liquid or foam.
finasteride and minoxidil

Pros: Finasteride and minoxidil have been medically approved, which means, during tests, they have been shown to have some effect on hair loss prevention.

Cons: Like with any medical treatment, there are many risks of negative side-effects. Finasteride, in particular, can give negative side-effects, such as erectile dysfunction, low libido, headaches, depression, feminisation, and skin rash.  Also, once you start using these treatments, you have to keep using them for as long as you want to keep your hair. Once you stop using the treatments, your hair will fall out.

Verdict: Medical treatments can be effective, but you'll most likely have to compromise on your health and wellbeing. We wouldn't advise young men in their 20s to take such treatments, without first exploring other safer options.

Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF)

What is it? Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) is an important endogenous mediator of hair follicle growth, development, and differentiation. Normalisation of the nu/nu follicular differentiation defect and amelioration of chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

Keratinocyte growth factor has shown to be an effective treatment for various male and female hair loss types. KGF is most commonly, and most effectively, used within a topical serum.

hair growth serum for men

Pros: KGF is generally regarded as a safe formula to use, with no major negative side-effects. It is a safer alternative to minoxidil, which many people would prefer to avoid. KGF is also effective, and only needs to be applied 3-4 times per week.

Cons: Despite its effectiveness, KGF can be quite expensive. Expect to pay in the region of £40-£50 for a 30ml dosage, which equates to around 4-6 weeks usage.

Verdict: KGF is a good, hard working formula that makes a safe and effective alternative to minoxidil. It's definitely worth trying, before you even consider harsh medical drugs.

HR23+ Hair Supplement

What is it? HR23+ is a leading multivitamin hair supplement, designed to prevent hair fall, and support hair growth, in men and women who suffer from earlier stages of thinning hair. Made from 23 key hair beneficiary ingredients, HR23+ works at the root cause of hair loss.

Cases will vary with each individual, but on average, about 9 out of 10 users have been pleased with the effects HR23+ has had on their hair. For men, HR23+ can dramatically slow down excessive hair fall, and increase the thickness of hair strands.

HR23+ hair supplement

Pros: Preliminary studies indicate that HR23+ is effective for the vast majority of men and women suffering from hair loss. HR23+ contains specific ingredients shown to support hair, follicle, or scalp health. It is also a safe supplement to take, with no major negative side-effects, which makes it a good alternative to harsh prescription drugs.

Cons: Despite its effectiveness, HR23+ does come at a price. Expect to pay in the region of £40-£50 per month for this supplement, however, you can purchase the product at a much lower price when you buy in multipacks, or take advantage of their regular offers.

Verdict: HR23+ is the best multivitamin hair supplement on the market. Many guys use HR23+ as a safe alternative to finasteride. HR23+ is effective for the hair, and completely free from negative sides.

Ketoconazole Shampoo (Nizoral)

What is it? Ketoconazole shampoo is helpful for persistent or more severe forms of dandruff. It contains an antifungal agent which kills the yeast-like germs, which cause the flaking of the scalp. Ketoconazole shampoo is also prescribed for a skin condition called pityriasis versicolor.

Ketoconazole shampoo, most commonly branded as Nizoral, is also used as a hair loss treatment for androgenetic alopecia (genetic pattern baldness) in both men and women.

hair regrowth treatment shampoo

Pros: When used in conjunction with other treatments, as part of a hair care plan, ketoconazole shampoo has shown to have positive effects on the hair. It can help reduce shedding, and encourage healthy hair growth. Nizoral is also affordably priced at around £3-£5 a bottle.

Cons: In some individuals, Nizoral shampoo may cause either oiliness or dryness of the hair or scalp, abnormal hair texture, or discoloration. It can cause permed hair to lose its curl as well.

Verdict: Nizoral is cheap, you only have to use it once a week, and its sides are minimal. This product makes a good addition to a hair care plan. You have very little to lose from using it.

Other Treatment Options

The products mentioned above can be effective for men who are experiencing early stages of thinning hair. Below, there are various, more expensive and advanced hair loss treatment options available, however, these tend to be for older men, who are at more advanced stages of baldness.

These sorts of treatments include:
  • Hair transplantation surgery
  • Low light laser therapy (LLLT)
  • Micropigmentation
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • Hair system
If you are suffering from early stages of hair loss, then you should avoid hair surgery for as long as possible. Your main aim should be to slow down and halt your hair loss, for as long as possible. This can be achieved with products like finasteride, minoxidil, KGF, HR23+, and Nizoral.

SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO PROPECIA: HR23+ HAIR LOSS TREATMENT

As part of our Hair Loss Awareness Month feature, we take a look at the FDA approved male hair loss treatment pill, Finasteride, and see whether there is a safe alternative to the prescription drug.

Finasteride for male pattern baldness

Finasteride, which is most commonly branded as Propecia or Proscar, is a medically approved oral treatment pill for male pattern baldness. It blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp.

Finasteride can be effective in slowing down and even halting hair loss in men, however, there are risks of negative side-effects, and some can be quite severe. The most common negative side-effects from Finasteride are: low sex drive, impotence/erectile dysfunction, skin rash, headaches, alternation of mood, breast swelling, and feminisation.

So, as you can imagine, a lot of men are not willing to take on the potential side-effects of Finasteride, which leads them to look elsewhere for safer alternatives. The question is, though: What is the best safe alternative to Finasteride?

Is there a safer treatment than Finasteride for male pattern baldness?

Finasteride is the only oral treatment that is medically approved, so replacing it with something that is free from chemicals and harsh drugs, isn't an easy task. Finasteride has proved to be effective in treating hair loss, whereas natural alternatives offer varying results, and many need further testing.

The most obvious alternative would be in the supplement form. Multi-vitamin supplements are fast becoming the most popular choice of product for hair health. They contain a broad range of anti-androgen ingredients, as well as hair growth promoters that combine to help slow down the rate of hair shedding, and increase the rate (and speed) of healthy hair growth.

Multi-vitamin supplements are unlikely to give the same results as Finasteride, but even so, they still offer men (and women) a viable solution for treating hair loss to a certain extent. The problem is, there are quite a few multi-vitamin supplements on the market to choose from, so finding one that works best for you individually, can be a tricky task.

Are multi-vitamin supplements good for hair growth?

In all honesty, the vast majority of multi-vitamin supplements are unlikely to be effective in treating hair loss. This is usually down to the fact that most multi-vitamin supplements lack enough hair beneficiary ingredients to make much difference to the hair. Many of these types of supplements are rushed and put together too quickly, with the sole purpose of getting them onto shelves to make money.

However, there are a few multi-vitamin supplements that can work well in slowing down hair loss, and helping with the maintenance of healthy hair growth.

Market leading multi-vitamin hair supplements such as Viviscal and HR23+ have been carefully formulated, with each ingredient serving its purpose for the cause. They are pricier than your average multi-vitamin supplement, but like with anything in life, you generally pay more for better quality.

What is the best multi-vitamin hair supplement?

Of the two main ones mentioned, HR23+ would probably be regarded as the best on the market. It has a fine blend of anti-androgens and hair growth promoters that combine to help prevent excess hair shedding, and support the function of healthy hair growth in men (and women) suffering from early stages of baldness and thinning hair.

HR23+ contains key B vitamins (Biotin, Folic Acid, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid) that are primarily responsible for the development of hair cell growth, as well as the skin cells and nails. Ginkgo Biloba contains natural qualities which help generate hair growth by providing more nutrients to the hair follicles.

The combination of Stinging Nettle (Nettle Leaf Extract) and Green Tea Extract helps stump excess shedding and promotes hair regrowth. The potent extract of Saw Palmetto may block 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT (the cause of baldness). HR23+ combines a key blend of hair growth promoters and DHT blocking properties for optimal results.

Although potent, HR23+ is free from negative side-effects, and offers men a safe and effective alternative to harsh prescription drugs like Finasteride.

Is HR23+ more effective than Finasteride?

In studies, 80% of men taking Finasteride 1mg preserved their original hair follicle counts and 64 percent experienced some regrowth after two years of continued use.

In a user survey taken by HR23+ in 2021, 48% of users noticed less hair fall, and 22% reported an improvement in hair thickness and texture.

It is likely that you will experience more noticeable results from using Finasteride, but HR23+ can offer you a safe and effective alternative, should you wish to avoid the negative side-effects.

WHAT IS THE BEST SUPPLEMENT THAT CAN TREAT HAIR LOSS?

David Bruce from HLS Hair Clinic.

Hair loss affects vast the majority of adult men, and about half of adult women. Losing hair is a universal problem, and it's not about to go away any time soon.

Although there isn't a cure for baldness and thinning hair, there are some treatments that can help slow down, and even halt hair fall. Thousands of men (and women) come to my clinic every year, seeking solutions for hair loss. In almost all cases, the hair loss type is pattern baldness.

The good news is, for patients who suffer from early stages of hair loss, the chances of finding an effective treatment are relatively high. As I always say to my patients, treating hair loss is a long and complicated process. Results vary from person to person, from treatment to treatment, therefore, I always recommend a period of trial and error.

Once you find a treatment that works for you, you'll be able to assemble a hair care plan, and hopefully, hold onto your hair for longer. Remember, treating baldness is a long-term thing, so, if you're determined to beat hair loss, be prepared to commit to a treatment plan that will go on for years, and it's likely to be quite expensive, too.

What Hair Loss Treatments to Recommend?

Hair loss treatments are varied, and with any treatment, results will always vary from person to person, therefore recommending a certain treatment to a patient can be quite difficult. With thousands of treatments to choose from, you must be careful not to commit to something that doesn't work.

I would say that, of all the hair loss treatments on the market, only around 5% of them will work to some extent, and only a small fraction of that 5% will work to a full extent.

Hair loss treatments come in varying forms, such as topical solutions, electric devices, and prescription drugs. There are also surgical procedures, like hair transplantation and micropigmentation. However, the most common form of treatment I recommend to my patients is the multi-vitamin supplement.

Why Multi-Vitamin Supplements are good for your hair

Multi-vitamin supplements are becoming hugely popular for treating baldness, and maintaining general hair health. They're safe, natural, and act as a healthier alternative to the potentially harsh chemically based prescription drugs, such as Finasteride. Some multi-vitamin supplements can be very effective in slowing down/halting hair fall, and adding thickness and strength to the strands.

Here, I'll run through the four multi-vitamin supplements that seem to be leading the way in today's market. Now, they're not all necessarily the best, but they're by far the most popular, and the ones I talk about most frequently to my patients.

1. HR23+ Hair Restoration Supplement

Made in the Untied Kingdom, and rated by many industry experts are the best multi-vitamin hair supplement on the market, HR23+ is a naturally formulated capsule that contains 23 key active ingredients that combine to help prevent excess hair shedding, and support the healthy function of hair growth in men (and women) who suffer from early stages of baldness and thinning hair.

This supplement was brought to market in 2015, and has since gone on to become Europe's leading hair product of its kind on the market. HR23+ not only helps stop hair loss, but it has also shown to promote the rate of hair growth, and improve strand thickness and texture.

Nearly 9 out of 10 users who I recommended this supplement to (87% men and 89% women) have been satisfied with the results, and have re-ordered it as an ongoing treatment. HR23+ also has the benefit of being safe and free from any negative side-effects. HR23+ is an excellent supplement to use in conjunction with other hair health products, and it is also popular with men post-hair transplant.

A single bottle of HR23+ (one month supply) retails for £49.95, but you can get it cheaper if you purchase it in multi-packs, and take advantage of the company's ongoing discount codes.

How effective is HR23+ for treating hair loss?

Although not medically approved, HR23+ can be an effective treatment for early stages of baldness. This highly potent multi-vitamin supplement contains a key blend of DHT blocking properties and hair growth promoters that work in conjunction with each other to help combat thinning, and support stronger hair growth.

Users should be realistic about taking any product of this nature, because it is not FDA approved, and results will vary from person to person. Many of my patients have reported a slowing down of hair loss, and thickening of hair, particularly in female users. Here is the annual user feedback report 2021

Some users have even reported some areas of hair regrowth, in and around the frontal hairline, and in the crown region of the scalp. The majority of my patients noticed significant improvements in their hair within 8-12 weeks of using HR23+. Some see results sooner, and others later. Only around 8% of my patients who have used HR23+ reported seeing no real change in their hair after the minimum trial period of 12 weeks.

HR23+ Verdict: HR23+ can work for the vast majority of male and female users, but you should be realistic about its effectiveness. If you suffer from early stages of baldness or thinning hair, then I would recommend using HR23+ for a minimum period of 10-12 weeks, continuously.

3. VIVISCAL Man Advance Hair Vitamins

Viviscal is the most well known hair supplement due to its commercial clout. They do separate supplements for Men and Women, with the women's version the more popular of the two. This supplement contains vital hair beneficiary ingredients Zinc and marine proteins. It helps maintain the growth of normal, healthy hair.
Around 7 out of 10 users who I recommended this supplement to (75% women and 62% men) have been satisfied with the results, and have re-ordered it as an ongoing treatment. Viviscal also has the benefit of being safe and free from any negative side-effects. Viviscal is not a medically approved treatment for baldness.

Expect to pay in the region of £39.99 for one bottle (one month supply), but you can get it cheaper if you purchase it in multi-packs, from various online sellers. The three pack option is the most popular purchase.

How effective is VIVISCAL for treating hair loss?

Viviscal is not FDA approved, but it can also act as an effective treatment for thinning hair. Both supplements can nourish the strands and help promote stronger hair growth, and are both suitable for all hair types.

Viviscal, along with HR23+, are now the only multi-vitamin hair supplements that I currently recommend to my patients. I used to recommend a host of other multi-vitamin hair supplements, but I found Viviscal and HR23+ to have the best success rate among the users. Users should be realistic when taking Viviscal, but, with continuous use for a minimum period of three months, there is every chance you will see significant improvements in your hair.

The majority of my patients did notice significant improvements in their hair within 8-12 weeks of using Viviscal, however, this was slightly below the success rate of HR23+. About 15% of my female patients who have used Viviscal reported seeing no real change in their hair after the minimum trial period of 12 weeks. It was considerably less for men, which leads me to believe the women's supplement is the more effective of the two.

Viviscal Verdict: Like any good multi-vitamin hair supplement on the market, Viviscal is quite expensive, but it falls within the usual pricing range for a product of this type. It can work for most male and female users, but you should be realistic about its effectiveness.

If you suffer from early stages of baldness or thinning hair, but you want to spend as little as possible, then I would recommend using Viviscal for a minimum period of 12 weeks, continuously.

4. TRX2 Hair Molecular Supplement

TRX2 is a food supplement designed to help men and women maintain normal healthy hair. It consists entirely of a blend of natural, hair growth promoting ingredients such as powerful amino acids and vitamins (potassium, biotin and L-carnitine).
TRX2 is made by Oxford Biolabs, manufactured in Germany, and it came to market in 2011. It had plenty of exposure through the media upon its release, and it quickly became the top selling hair supplement in Europe by 2013.

TRX2 only contains a handful of active ingredients, in comparison to the 20+ ingredients you'll find in HR23+ and the  Viviscal products. The active ingredients used in TRX2 include Biotin and Zinc, both of which you'll find in HR23+ and Viviscal supplements.

TRX2 bases its theory on potassium channels: Potassium ion channels have been implicated in a vast array of diseases ranging from hepatitis C to diabetes. These small pore-forming protein structures control the transport of potassium ions across the hair follicle’s cell membrane and are essential for retaining the follicle’s full biological activity and function.

It's a flawed theory, and one that doesn't make much sense when you delve deeper into it. TRX2 is, effectively, a supplement that is loaded with potassium. There is little evidence to suggest this theory could even be close to being viable, and this is shown in the decade this product has existed - there has been no sufficient evidence to suggest that users of this supplement have experienced any of the claimed results.

I used to recommend my patients to TRX2, but I have since stopped doing so. None of my patients, both male or female, noticed any significant results from using TRX2. I've yet to have any positive feedback from any male or female user of TRX2.

TRX2 Verdict: TRX2 is by far the most expensive supplement of the ones mentioned in this article. Results will vary from person to person, but I would warn you to be very cautious before spending your hard earned money on TRX2. For its price, and how its users have rated it, it's a big risk to take. I would put this supplement as the weakest of the four.
Rating: 2/5

Final verdict: Which hair growth supplement is the best?

As a professional who has worked in the hair loss sector for over ten years, I would have no hesitation in recommending HR23+ or both Viviscal products to my patients who suffer from early stages of baldness and thinning hair. Based on the experiences of my patients, and feedback it received, I would not recommend TRX2.

As I have said throughout this article, results will vary from person to person. Different products have varying results, and unless a product is specifically approved as a treatment for hair loss, it is impossible to recommend a product that will give you 100% effective results.

HOW TO STOP EARLY STAGES OF BALDNESS AND THINNING HAIR

How to best treat early stages of Male Pattern Baldness

It seems an increasing amount of young men are losing their hair. What was once something that happened to a guy in his 40s, is now regularly occurring in his 20s. Hair loss is more frequent than ever, and without a cure, it's not about to go away any time soon.

Fear not, though, because even without a cure, there are still some viable ways in which you can minimise hair loss, and maintain your locks. It's just a matter of knowing what treatments for baldness are out there, and what could potentially work for you.

Over the next four weeks of Hair Loss Awareness Month, we'll produce some hair loss related articles for you guys to mull over, and we hope they help you find a solution for your hair.  In this addition, we'll go through some treatments available to help tackle the devastating effects of baldness and thinning hair in young men

Minoxidil

Let's start off with Minoxidil. Minoxidil, which you'll probably recognise in the form of Regaine (or Rogaine in the US), is the only medically approved topical hair loss treatment on the market, which can also be purchased over the counter with no doctor's prescription.

The Minoxidil treatment is a common starting point for men who are noticing early stages of thinning hair. The FDA approved treatment for hair loss has been shown to help slow down the rate of hair fall, and help regrow hair, albeit, on a minor scale. Don't expect miracles from this, though, as it is unlikely to make severe changes to your hair - however, it is worth trying if you are suffering from early stages of baldness.

It should also be noted that Minoxidil can come with negative side-effects such as headaches, dizziness, weight gain, skin rash, and fatigue.

Also, don't be put off by the expensive supermarket brands like Regaine/Rogaine, because you can purchase Minoxidil for much cheaper, when you go with brands like Kirkland - it's exactly the same product at just a fraction of the price.

Minoxidil comes in two forms - liquid and foam - You would probably be better off purchasing the foam, as it dries instantly, and is less messy to apply. 5% extra strength is the one you want. Apply 1ml (half a cap) twice a day (morning and night) every day. One can of Minoxidil foam will last you around four weeks. You might feel a little dizzy during the first few applications, but these symptoms should go away as you get used to it.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is a North American plant extract. Studies have shown it can prevent the formation of DHT (the cause of baldness). It's a potent extract, so caution is advised, however, it is generally regarded as a safe supplement, and it's also a good treatment to help prevent the risks of prostate cancer.

Many men (and women) have noticed less hair falling out after taking it, but bear in mind, it doesn't help with the regrowth of hair. Although Saw Palmetto is very cheap, and can be purchased for around £10 a bottle, it is more effective when used in conjunction with other hair beneficiary ingredients.

There are a lot of myths surrounding Saw Palmetto, but most are exactly that - myths. There's no harm in adding a little Saw Palmetto to your daily intake. Just make sure you don't take too much. 250mg-500mg should suffice.

Biotin

Biotin is a hair growth promoter, so be sure to add it to your daily intake. Biotin pills are cheap, high dosage, and effective. While Saw Palmetto helps prevent the shedding, Biotin helps promote hair growth - so it's a great combination. Many of the top multi-vitamin hair supplements use the combination of Biotin and Saw Palmetto, because they work so well together.

As good as  Biotin is for your hair, it will not regrow the strands. It will make the hair grow faster, and it can increase the thickness and texture of the strands, but it doesn't physically regrow lost hair. However, when used with Saw Palmetto, it can be a hugely effective treatment for early stages of hair loss.

Multi-Vitamin Supplements

For the hair to thrive, we all need to get certain vitamins and minerals in our daily diet, but this is near impossible through food alone. So, multi-vitamin supplements offer you an excellent solution for your hair. With a leading multi-vitamin hair supplement like HR23+, you'll be consuming key hair ingredients like Folic Acid, MSM, Pumpkin Seed, Nettle Leaf, Choline, and Gingko Biloba through one, easy to swallow, convenient pill.

HR23+ is a carefully formulated multi-vitamin hair supplement that is packed with 23 hair beneficiary ingredients, including the DHT inhibitor, Saw Palmetto, and the hair growth agent, Biotin. This supplement is the market leader, and has been getting some positive reviews from the male (and female) users, so it is definitely worth a try. Start off with a three month trial and then asses your results. As far as supplements go, HR23+ is definitely your best bet.

Micro-needling

Here's a little secret from the hair loss industry. Consider using a derma roller. A derma roller is a small device that uses pins to puncture tiny wounds into the skin. In order to heal the wounds, the body produces collagen, which promotes the growth of hair follicles.

This micro-needling device is used for anti-ageing on the facial skin, but users have discovered it can also work for re-growing hair. It has become particularly popular with men using it on their hairline.

You can purchase the recommended 0.5mm derma roller for about £10 from Amazon. Once you're ready to use it, simply roll the pins along the desired area of your scalp once or twice a week, for 102 minutes at a time. This can be even more effective when used in conjunction with Minoxidil and HR23+

Additional Tips to Beat Hair Loss

This may seem like a lot, but it really isn't. It's just a case of starting the routine, and sticking to it. Once it becomes a art of your daily routine, you won't think twice about it.

It is easy to be defeatist and negative when it comes to hair loss, but there are plenty of safe and effective ways to treat it. So, relax, try and stress less (stress is a major cause of hair loss), and try not to think so much about your hair so much. Don't let it become an obsession. Just implement the plan into your daily routine and get on with living life. Using these treatments can help you hold onto your hair for longer.

Also, remember it is perfectly natural to experience thinning hair as you approach your 30s. All men do. That is a fact. The problem is, most men don't do anything about it and they end up bald by the age of 35. Just start treating your hair now and you'll enjoy your hair for longer.

HOW TO STOP HAIR LOSS (IN MEN): WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

Best hair loss treatments for men

Hair loss seems to be more common than ever. Over 65% of men will suffer from some form of baldness by the age of 40, and 80% will suffer the same fate by the age of 50. Hair loss affects so many men around the world, and yet, cruelly, we still don't have a cure for it.

However, now isn't the time to panic, because although there isn't a cure for baldness, the good news is, there are perfectly viable treatments on the market that can help slow down hair shedding, and even stop it. It's just a case of finding which ones work for your individual case.

So, in this article, we'll go through some of the more viable options for hair loss sufferers. There has never been a more optimistic time to suffer from hair loss, so be sure to take advantage of the options available to you...

Medically Approved Treatments for Baldness

There are just two medically approved (FDA approved) hair loss treatments on the market today. Finasteride (also known as Propecia) is a prescription only pill for men. It can reduce DHT and help stop further hair loss in men who suffer from early stages of baldness and thinning hair.

Although results can be good, the risk of negative side-effects is high. Some common side-effects associated with Finasteride include: low libido, erectile dysfunction, and long-term impotence. Some users have even complained of having low energy, and mental health issues.

The second medically approved treatment is Minoxidil (also labelled under a host of brands, most commonly known as Regaine/Rogaine). Minoxidil is the only topical treatment that is FDA approved. It can be purchased as a foam or a liquid, it depends on your personal preference.

Minoxidil can help slow down the hair loss process, and in some cases, regrow hair - but only on a minimal scale. There are also some side-effects that can come with Minoxidil, such as headaches, dizziness, skin rash, and in extreme cases, weight gain.  You should speak to your physician before committing to either of these treatments.

Multi-Vitamin Hair Growth Supplements

Multi-vitamin hair supplements are fast becoming the most popular treatment for hair loss among men (and women). The main reasons so many people are turning to multi-vitamin supplements is because they offer a safe and natural alternative to the harsh prescription drugs, and some of them can actually produce very good results.

The market leaders are Viviscal and HR23+. Both contain a rich list of hair beneficiary ingredients that can help slow down shedding, and help increase the rate and speed of healthy hair growth. Multi-vitamin supplements are safe, and they also offer you good nutritional values, which means you're putting good ingredients into your body, while never compromising on your health.

Hair Transplantation

Hair transplants are becoming increasingly popular due to the fact they're more accessible than ever, and they're also more affordable. If you are suffering from more advanced stages of baldness, then hair surgery could well be for you.

There are a range of options, from a simple hairline fill, to a more advanced procedure that would require more coverage. It really does depend on your unique situation. Hair transplants are becoming more affordable, with prices starting at £2,000 in the UK, and as low as £1,000 in Turkey.

If you are considering a hair transplant, then be sure to look around, talk to surgeons, and make sure you see customer reviews testimonials, and case studies. It is important that you can trust the clinic, and rely on them to do a good job.

Scalp Micropigmentation

If you've given up on having hair, but would still like to have the perfect hairline, then scalp micropigmentation could well be for you. What is micropigmentation? Well, to put it simply, it is a tattoo. Yes, that's right, qualified clinics offer men the option to tattoo a hairline onto the scalp, creating the illusion of a full hairline/head of hair.

If a shaved head or a shorter cropped hairstyle is your thing, then this procedure could well be the best option for you. The detail of the 'tattoo' is exceptional, making it look like you've got a great head of hair, but have chosen to keep it short.

Biotin and Saw Palmetto

Supplements like Biotin (Vitamin B7) and Saw Palmetto Extract, will do little to treat hair loss on their own, but when combined together with a host of hair beneficiary ingredients, they can work wonders with your hair.

Biotin has been found to strengthen hair, and help it grow faster, whereas Saw Palmetto has been found to block the formation of DHT, thus

As mentioned above, multi-vitamin supplements like HR23+ contain Biotin and Saw Palmetto, along with a host of other ingredients that work together to help slow down hair loss and promote stronger, thicker hair growth.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy is a three-step medical treatment for hair loss. It is a process in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp.

Parts of the medical community think that PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. This procedure can be done alongside other treatments.

Research to prove if PRP is an effective hair loss treatment is still sparse, but results have been promising, so far. PRP therapy has been in use since the 1980s. It’s been used for healing ligaments and muscles injuries.

Micro-Needling Therapy

Micro-needling is also nicknamed skin needling, because of its effects on increasing collagen production in the skin. It's thought that this can result in new hair growth, or perhaps, it may thicken thinning hair as seen in androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness.

Clinical research on using the micro-needling method for hair loss has shown that a derma roller is effective in helping to repair hair loss, both with and without Minoxidil. Results showed that men, in particular, who used the derma roller with Minoxidil had significantly more hair growth than the men who used minoxidil on its own.

More studies are needed to back the claim, but with derma rollers costing under £10, it could be worth a try at the very least. To start, try a 0.5mm derma roller, and micro-needle the thinning areas on your scalp, no more than twice a week.
