best hair care products for men

Enhance your hair with the essential spring hair care plan

Spring season is always a welcome time of the year, as we wave goodbye to the cold, dark winter months, and embrace the warmer and brighter time of year.

What many guys don't know is that with a new season comes a new grooming routine - and one of the most important parts of any man's grooming routine is his hair care regimen.

The health of our hair changes through each season of the year, with key factors playing a role in the density, strength and durability of our locks. Believe it or not, spring season can play havoc on our locks, which is why it's important to assemble a good hair care plan for the spring months.

In no particular order, we look at five key hair care products that you should look to use during the spring months. With regular use, this hair care plan can help you get the best out of your strands...

A. Moroccanoil Treatment

Achieve smoother and healthier hair with Moroccanoil Treatment, infused with antioxidant-rich Argan Oil to detangle, boost shine, and leave you with nourished, smooth and more manageable locks. Moroccanoil Treatment pioneered oil-infused hair care, and can be used as a conditioning, styling, and finishing tool. Supercharged with antioxidant rich Argan Oil and shine-boosting Vitamins, this product can help defend against the harsher elements of spring season.

B. Mr. Alpha Moisturising Hair Mask

Restore dry brittle hair with this impressive coconut and argan oil-infused Moisturising Hair Mask. This product provides deep conditioning, leaving hair looking shiny and full of luster after just 5 minutes. Combine with a good volumising shampoo for fuller, healthier-looking hair.

D. High-Strength Iron Supplement 14mg

If, like many men, you suffer from excessive hair shedding during the early spring months, then it's probably wise to up your iron intake. Iron helps boost blood circulation and carries oxygen to your hair's roots, which helps the hair grow faster and longer. An iron deficiency can lead to hair loss.

E. HR23+ Hair Supplement

If you're experiencing hair loss (not just during spring), then it is important to act as quickly as possible, because the earlier you tackle the issue, the more hair you'll keep!  HR23+ is the leading hair supplement that is designed to stop early stages of hair loss, and support the function of healthy hair growth. This non-medical supplement is safe to take, and works in 9 out of 10 users.

HOW TO BENEFIT FROM HAIR LOSS AWARENESS MONTH

For hair loss sufferers, the month of August is the most important time of the year. The four weeks of August mark Hair Loss Awareness Month. It is the month of the year that is dedicated to everything hair loss, for both men and women.

To mark this year's Hair Loss Awareness Month, we've assembled some key benefits you'll get from it. So, if you suffer from baldness and thinning hair, here's why you should grab Hair Loss Awareness Month with both hands...

Learn About Hair Loss

This may seem obvious, but you're likely to learn more about hair loss during Hair Loss Awareness Month than any other time of the year. Companies, clinics, and information centres will be presenting plenty of information about the topic of baldness across the internet, so, if you need to know more about baldness, its causes, treatments etc. then be sure to keep your eyes peeled for free, regular information.

Discounts on Hair Loss Treatments

One of the great benefits of Hair Loss Awareness Month is that many of the top clinics and treatments will be slashing their prices. So, if you're looking to get a surgical procedure, or if you use treatments for your hair, then be sure to keep an eye out for discounts and price-cuts - there will be plenty of them.

Share Your Hair Loss Experiences

During Hair Loss Awareness Month, many hair loss forums and social media boards are packed with hair loss sufferers sharing their experiences with baldness and thinning hair. Take this opportunity to get information about hair loss, and what kinds of treatments have been working for certain individuals. Who knows, you may end up finding a treatment or routine that works for you.

Most Common Types of Hair Loss in Men

Hair loss occurs in two thirds of men, but the process of going bald isn't always the same. Although they all fall into the 'male pattern baldness' category, there are three different types of progressions. Here are the main three...

Thinning Hair

Losing up to 150 hairs daily is perfectly normal, however, it does become an issue when the amount exceeds that. While it's not particularly noticeable at first, it can however become a real problem. An overall thinning is more common in women, but also in men. This is when the top of the scalp experiences thinning, evenly throughout. As the hair gets thinner, the scalp gradually shows more and more, until it eventually leads to full baldness.

Receding Hair Line

Perhaps the most common form of hair loss, it occurs in 65% of men by the age of 45. This pattern starts with gradual receding at the frontal hairline, eventually leading to thinning on the crown, and in many cases, full baldness. This is usually a slow process, but cases vary, and so sometimes it can be quick.

Patchy Hair Loss

Often caused by stress, bad diet and illness, this type of hair loss can happen suddenly and should be handled with caution. Patchy hair loss is usually a temporary form of baldness, but it can be long term, so you should see your doctor about it before committing to any treatments.

HOW TO STOP HAIR LOSS (IN MEN): WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

Best hair loss treatments for men

Hair loss seems to be more common than ever. Over 65% of men will suffer from some form of baldness by the age of 40, and 80% will suffer the same fate by the age of 50. Hair loss affects so many men around the world, and yet, cruelly, we still don't have a cure for it.

However, now isn't the time to panic, because although there isn't a cure for baldness, the good news is, there are perfectly viable treatments on the market that can help slow down hair shedding, and even stop it. It's just a case of finding which ones work for your individual case.

So, in this article, we'll go through some of the more viable options for hair loss sufferers. There has never been a more optimistic time to suffer from hair loss, so be sure to take advantage of the options available to you...

Medically Approved Treatments for Baldness

There are just two medically approved (FDA approved) hair loss treatments on the market today. Finasteride (also known as Propecia) is a prescription only pill for men. It can reduce DHT and help stop further hair loss in men who suffer from early stages of baldness and thinning hair.

Although results can be good, the risk of negative side-effects is high. Some common side-effects associated with Finasteride include: low libido, erectile dysfunction, and long-term impotence. Some users have even complained of having low energy, and mental health issues.

The second medically approved treatment is Minoxidil (also labelled under a host of brands, most commonly known as Regaine/Rogaine). Minoxidil is the only topical treatment that is FDA approved. It can be purchased as a foam or a liquid, it depends on your personal preference.

Minoxidil can help slow down the hair loss process, and in some cases, regrow hair - but only on a minimal scale. There are also some side-effects that can come with Minoxidil, such as headaches, dizziness, skin rash, and in extreme cases, weight gain.  You should speak to your physician before committing to either of these treatments.

Multi-Vitamin Hair Growth Supplements

Multi-vitamin hair supplements are fast becoming the most popular treatment for hair loss among men (and women). The main reasons so many people are turning to multi-vitamin supplements is because they offer a safe and natural alternative to the harsh prescription drugs, and some of them can actually produce very good results.

The market leaders are Viviscal and HR23+. Both contain a rich list of hair beneficiary ingredients that can help slow down shedding, and help increase the rate and speed of healthy hair growth. Multi-vitamin supplements are safe, and they also offer you good nutritional values, which means you're putting good ingredients into your body, while never compromising on your health.

Hair Transplantation

Hair transplants are becoming increasingly popular due to the fact they're more accessible than ever, and they're also more affordable. If you are suffering from more advanced stages of baldness, then hair surgery could well be for you.

There are a range of options, from a simple hairline fill, to a more advanced procedure that would require more coverage. It really does depend on your unique situation. Hair transplants are becoming more affordable, with prices starting at £2,000 in the UK, and as low as £1,000 in Turkey.

If you are considering a hair transplant, then be sure to look around, talk to surgeons, and make sure you see customer reviews testimonials, and case studies. It is important that you can trust the clinic, and rely on them to do a good job.

Scalp Micropigmentation

If you've given up on having hair, but would still like to have the perfect hairline, then scalp micropigmentation could well be for you. What is micropigmentation? Well, to put it simply, it is a tattoo. Yes, that's right, qualified clinics offer men the option to tattoo a hairline onto the scalp, creating the illusion of a full hairline/head of hair.

If a shaved head or a shorter cropped hairstyle is your thing, then this procedure could well be the best option for you. The detail of the 'tattoo' is exceptional, making it look like you've got a great head of hair, but have chosen to keep it short.

Biotin and Saw Palmetto

Supplements like Biotin (Vitamin B7) and Saw Palmetto Extract, will do little to treat hair loss on their own, but when combined together with a host of hair beneficiary ingredients, they can work wonders with your hair.

Biotin has been found to strengthen hair, and help it grow faster, whereas Saw Palmetto has been found to block the formation of DHT, thus

As mentioned above, multi-vitamin supplements like HR23+ contain Biotin and Saw Palmetto, along with a host of other ingredients that work together to help slow down hair loss and promote stronger, thicker hair growth.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy is a three-step medical treatment for hair loss. It is a process in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp.

Parts of the medical community think that PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. This procedure can be done alongside other treatments.

Research to prove if PRP is an effective hair loss treatment is still sparse, but results have been promising, so far. PRP therapy has been in use since the 1980s. It’s been used for healing ligaments and muscles injuries.

Micro-Needling Therapy

Micro-needling is also nicknamed skin needling, because of its effects on increasing collagen production in the skin. It's thought that this can result in new hair growth, or perhaps, it may thicken thinning hair as seen in androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness.

Clinical research on using the micro-needling method for hair loss has shown that a derma roller is effective in helping to repair hair loss, both with and without Minoxidil. Results showed that men, in particular, who used the derma roller with Minoxidil had significantly more hair growth than the men who used minoxidil on its own.

More studies are needed to back the claim, but with derma rollers costing under £10, it could be worth a try at the very least. To start, try a 0.5mm derma roller, and micro-needle the thinning areas on your scalp, no more than twice a week.

WHY ARE MORE YOUNG MEN GOING BALD?

Guest post by David Langer

Why does it seem like more and more young men in their 20s are losing their hair more rapidly than past generations? Is this really happening or is this a mere configuration of our imagination?

Having been on Facebook for over ten years (I am now 29), naturally I have a large group of friends on there, many of whom I went to school and college with. From my friends on Facebook, around 275 are male, most of whom are around my age.

Now, having noticed this trend by fluke, I would estimate that over 50% of my male friends have either started to recede or are on their way to baldness before they even reached 30. I found this quite surprising, especially considering male pattern baldness is meant to be something that affects the minority of men.

According to some statistics floating around the internet, over 60% of men will suffer from some form of hair loss by the time they reach their 40s. Isn't that just crazy? Surely that can't be true, cant it? It would certainly explain why so many of the men in my social networks seem to be losing their hair at such young ages.

So are more men actually going bald?

Unless a very large scale study is performed to compare the men of today to the men of yesteryear, this is a question that we cannot answer accurately. If this is actually the case, then I have a few theories that may explain why.

Society has changed from 20 or 30 years ago, with dramatic changes in lifestyles, diets and health routines. Even though the main cause of male pattern baldness is genetics, it's no secret that stress can play a huge role in losing hair. It's common knowledge that an increasing amount of young men are suffering from stress more than our past generations ever did. Could this be a valid reason why a large amount of men are losing their hair so early in life?

Also, due to the technological factor, our diets and lifestyles have changed dramatically, therefore this could play a huge part in the rapid increase of balding in young men. Are we giving our bodies the right amount of key vitamins and nutrients to sustain healthy hair growth?

Based on the theory of genetics, perhaps too many of today's young men have been unfortunate enough to be a part of the wrong genetic pool, of which has cost them their full head of hair at such an early point in their lives.

Can hair loss be treated or cured?
hair
I am not an expert in the field of hair loss, but I know for a fact there is no cure for hair loss, as the market currently stands. The hair loss industry is worth billions of pounds, so it seems pretty evident that many brands and companies are all wanting a big slice of the lucrative cake. But how many of these 'treatments' on the market actually work, and what is it that they actually claim to do?

Like I said, I am not an expert in hair loss of any kind, so don't quote me on this, but having done a little research of my own and spoken to the majority of my male friends on Facebook who are suffering from balding, it seems there are indeed options, in the way of products and treatments, that can enable men to slow down and even prevent baldness.

The affordable treatments for hair loss tend to come in two main forms: the oral tablet/pill, and the topical solution. Some guys use one type of treatment and other guys prefer to go for the double combo. Herbal tablets and pills tend to be the most popular form of treatment, as some of them provide the body with key vitamins and nutrients for hair health. Topical solutions come in the way of serums, shampoos, foams and oils that can penetrate into the scalp and revitalise weak hair follicles.

The only FDA approved hair loss treatments are Minoxidil (a topical solution) and Finasteride (Propecia), but these two products tend to come with nasty side-effects, so try to avoid these two if you can.

Are men actively looking for hair loss solutions?

Of my male friends who I spoke to, I would say only around 10% are trying to do something about their hair loss problem. The vast majority of guys were perfectly accepting of the fact they were going to lose their hair by the time they reached 40, but none were particularly pleased about this.

To me at least, and many of you I am sure, it does seem like an ever increasing amount of men in their 20s are suffering from balding and thinning hair. We look at the older generation of men in their 40s and 50s, and so many of them seem to have thick hair and strong hairlines. Could this be pure coincidence or is there some truth in this observation?

The main thing to take from this is that if you are a man in your 20s and you are losing your hair, it's always recommended to tackle the issue as quickly as possible. You really don't want to be entering your 40s with no hair on your head, filled with regret that you didn't at least try to do something about it sooner.

So, if you're ploughing through the Norwood Scale, then go to your doctor for some advice. If, like many men, you're a little embarrassed to talk to your doctor about your hair loss, then do some research, try some natural products and treatments, and start your battle with hair loss as soon as possible. The earlier you start, the more chance you'll have of retaining a decent head of hair when you creep into your 40s.

BEATING HAIR LOSS: WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

beating hair loss what are the options

Hair loss happens to be one of the most devastating things a man (and woman) can go through. Hair loss usually occurs in men by the time they reach their 30s, but some men experience baldness as early as their 20s. With over 60% of men set to suffer from thinning hair by the time they reach 40, it's no wonder many of us are seeking solutions for our hair.

What can you realistically expect when it comes to battling hair loss? Well, with no miracle cure on the market, there are still ways in which you can slow down balding and promote healthy hair growth. From using treatments and living by certain disciplines, many men have discovered how easy it can be to halt male pattern baldness and maintain healthy, thick hair growth.

So, what are the options when it comes to beating hair loss? Here, we take a look at some of the most common and successful practices, as well as a few cheeky tips that'll stand you a better chance of preventing balding and thinning hair.

Hair Transplantation

hair transplant for men

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body called the 'donor site' to bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to the bald scalp.

If you are suffering from advanced stages of balding (Norwood 4+) then a hair transplant would provide a good option for you. The success rate for hair transplantations is good, but it does come with a hefty price tag. Expect to pay in the region of £8000 for a single session, with additional fees and treatments ongoing from there. Realistically, you'll be forking out anything between £20k-£30k for a successful procedure from start to finish.

Price: Anything between £8,000 - £30,000

Finasteride (Propecia)

finasteride for hair loss

Finasteride (AKA Propecia) is a drug for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and male pattern baldness. It is a type II 5α-reductase inhibitor; 5α-reductase, an enzyme, converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Propecia is available as a prescription drug, and results have been positive in regards to stopping hair loss in men. However, this little pill does have a tendency to aggravate some nasty side-effects that have affected so many men, even after stopping the treatment. Common side-effects from taking Propecia include low libido, erectile dysfunction, skin rash and hormonal imbalance. If you are considering using Propecia, then just be aware of what could potentially come with it.

Price: from £30 per month

Topical Solutions

best hair growth serums

If you're looking to avoid the nasty side-effects that come with Propecia and the pricey procedure of a hair transplant, then you could consider a topical solution for your hair.

Topical solutions have had a steady success rate within the hair loss market, with the FDA approved solution, Minoxidil (AKA Regaine), the most popular formula. Topical treatments come in various forms such as serums, shampoos, foams and sprays, and can provide hair follicles with the essential additives needed for prevention of balding and the promotion of healthier hair growth.

Please see our article, 7 Topical Solutions For Treating Hair Loss, for more information on this treatment form.

Price: From £30 per month

Natural Supplements

hair growth supplements

Naturally formulated hair health supplements offer you the chance to treat hair loss without the worry of the nasty side-effects you would associate with Propecia. Some remain sceptical about tablets being able to treat hair loss, but the fact of the matter is, they can.

Through scientific studies, supplements can provide hair follicles with essential elements that pave the way for balding prevention and hair growth promotion. Natural supplements are far more popular than anything else in the hair treatment market due to their success rates and affordability. If you're on the hunt for an effective hair supplement then look out for key ingredients biotin (the growth agent), saw palmetto (the DHT blocker) and other key hair growth beneficiaries like green tea and grape seed extract.

Price: From £40 per month

Hair Laser Brush/Comb

Laser combs are handheld, low-intensity laser devices that allegedly stimulate the growth of the hair follicle. The HairMax LaserComb and the X-5 are the only two laser combs that are FDA approved. Although many doctors are sceptical about these devices, there are also a lot of people who claim they are effective and have helped them grow hair.

7 TOPICAL SOLUTIONS FOR TREATING HAIR LOSS

best hair growth serums for baldness

What are hair growth serums and can they help with baldness and thinning hair?

In our previous article we covered 7 supplements for treating hair loss, but it's a well known fact many men and women aren't all that keen on consuming a product orally. When it comes to hair loss treatments, supplements firmly lead the way, with Propecia being the only FDA approved tablet for treating balding. With all that said, topical solutions such as foams, sprays and serums also play a huge part in the make up of the hair care industry. Minoxidil is currently the only FDA approved topical solution for treating hair loss, but it doesn't necessarily work for everyone.

So, in no particular order, we round off our hair loss treatment guide with our pick and rating of seven topical solutions for treating hair loss in men (and women).

LA SCIENCE SERUM ★★★★★
LA Science Serum delivers growth factor mimicking peptides to the base of the follicle, which stimulates hair follicles to produce healthier hair shafts. It improves the hair and scalp condition, normalising the hair growth cycle. This popular serum has established itself on the hair loss market for a considerable amount of time, coming with popular reviews from men and women.

The ingredients in LA Science Serum are good, but not revolutionary. This quick absorbing formula can certainly add volume and shine to the hair, making it a very popular choice wtih women. This hair serum is priced fairly at just £25 a bottle.

DR. WOLFF PLANTUR 39 & ALPECIN C1 SHAMPOO ★★★★★
You've probably seen the advertising for the two hugely popular anti-hair loss shampoos by Dr. Wolff. Plantur 39 and Alpecin C1 have become the fastest selling treatment shampoos, and it's no coincidence why. Dr. Wolff pledges a main focus on the use of caffeine in order to energise weakened hair follicles in both Plantur 39 for women and Alpecin C1 for men.

Price wise, these are the most affordable topical products on our list, at under £10 per bottle, in each case. Both shampoos are widely available in chemists and supermarkets, and are definitely the best bargains you'll find when it comes to treating your hair.

VIVISCAL HAIR & SCALP SERUM ★★★★★
99% naturally derived, Viviscal Hair and Scalp Serum can be applied to wet or dry hair. It is clear, non-greasy and easy-to-apply and doesn’t leave a residue or weigh hair down. The Exclusive Ana: Tel™ complex includes naturally derived ingredients such as pea sprout and grape seed. Creatine helps to improve the smoothness, volume and ‘feel’ of the hair. Menthol invigorates the scalp and aids absorption of the serum.

At £25 per 60ml bottle, this product offers excellent value for money. With a set of decent additives, this anti-hair fall serum could well be worth a punt for men and women.

GROW GORGEOUS HAIR GROWTH SERUM ★★★★★
Grow Gorgeous Hair Growth Serum is a rather quirky addition to our list. This serum is an ultra-concentrated formula with a proprietary 21.5% active complex blend of 7 technologies that work hard together to make hair visibly longer, thicker and fuller.

£30 for one bottle is actually a fair price when you take into account the amount of ingredients used. However, if you're looking for a genuine hair loss solution, for all its beautiful branding, this probably won't provide you with the solution you've been looking for.

HR23+ SCALP THERAPY TREATMENT SERUM ★★★★★
HR23+ Hair Growth Serum combines nourishing actives for the hair and Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF). With powerful active ingredients known to help promote hair growth in both men and women, actives were added to help with poor scalp micro-circulation, follicle atrophy caused by dihydrotestosterone, and follicle ageing - led by Chrysin and Grape Seed Proanthocyanidins.
For a 30ml bottle of HR23+ Serum you'll be expected to spend in between £30-£40, which seems excessive, but if you delve into the ingredients and the additions of KGF and Saw Palmetto, you'll start to realise why this premium serum is priced so high.

FOLIGAIN D12 HAIR GROWTH STIMULATOR ★★★★★
Foligain D12 DHT Blocker Drops (12% Trichogen) are powerful, for a safe and natural hair loss treatment that is quickly becoming one of the most popular hair care products on the market! This works for both men and women, and because it contains organic ingredients, it has zero side effects and is effective for temporary and permanent hair loss.

£30 per 60ml is the price you'll have to pay for this Australian hair serum, but the ingredients do suggest it could well be worth investing in. The branding alone is terrific!

If you are one of 60% of men that suffer from hair loss and are tempted to try hair topical solutions, then make sure you do your research before purchasing. As with all serums and treatments, results will vary with each individual.

HOW BALD ARE YOU?

Take a good look at the diagram above. This diagram represents a rough outline of the Norwood Scale - a generic measurement of the stages of male pattern baldness. The Norwood Scale takes measurements of hair loss in men from stages 2-7. The Norwood Scale should be used to diagnose the stage of hair loss where you are currently at, in order to begin the process of relevant treatment.

Over 60% of men suffer from some stage of hair loss by the time they reach their 40s. Hair loss most commonly occurs in men from the age of 30 - this usually consists of receding of the temples/hairline and thinning hair on the crown of the head. The speed of hair fall depends on a number of factors such as genetics and treatments. Hair loss sufferers in their 20s are more prone to become emotionally affected by this devastating process, with some young men suffering from serious physiological conditions such as depression.

The hair loss treatment market has never been as big as it currently stands, with a wide array of hair supplements, foams, shampoos and surgical procedures readily available for men and women looking for a quick fix solution. Unfortunately it should be noted that, as it stands, there is not a 100% cure for hair loss. Prescription treatments such as Propecia offer excellent hair loss solutions for men and have a successful track record, but the major down side is that drugs Propecia can come with some nasty side-effects such as erectile dysfunction and outbreak of spots on the facial skin.

CAN HAIR LOSS BE SLOWED DOWN OR PREVENTED?

Many men (and women) have turned to affordable, natural hair loss solutions such as HR23 in an attempt to combat hair loss and thinning hair. Although there are many hair supplements that claim to stop hair loss, the truth is  most of these products probably don't work. Much of this depends on each individual and how best your own genetics work and react with the specific additives in each supplement. In many cases, your mission to find the right hair loss treatment will more than likely need a good period of trial and error.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TREATMENT?

With the hair care market constantly expanding, choosing a hair loss treatment can be quite a daunting task. If you're looking to avoid side-effect prone drugs and expensive surgical procedures, then you'll probably want to opt for a safe, all-natural hair health supplement that comes with a good success rate. Popular hair restoration supplements like TRX2 and HR23 come with excellent reviews from men and women who have used them on a regular basis over a long period of time. Potent ingredients such as saw palmetto and biotin offer excellent nutrients for healthy hair growth, and these are safe ingredients that are quite common in many anti-hair loss supplements.

If you are seriously considering taking hair health supplements then one important thing should be noted: For best results, hair supplements should only be taken if you suffer from early stages of hair loss - ideally from Norwood Scale 2-3. The earlier you tackle the problem the best chance you have of sustaining your hair for a longer period of time.
