header image man hair summer time

Hair loss can be a concern for many men, and addressing it proactively can help slow down or prevent further loss. As part of our Hair Loss Awareness Month coverage, here, we go through some tips to help prevent hair loss, especially in the summer month of August when additional factors like sun exposure can come into play:

1. Maintain a Healthy Diet

  • Include Nutrients: Ensure your diet is rich in essential nutrients such as proteins, iron, zinc, and vitamins (especially Vitamin D, B-complex, and Vitamin E).
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your scalp hydrated and healthy.

2. Protect Your Scalp from Sun Exposure

  • Wear Hats or Caps: Protect your scalp from direct sun exposure by wearing hats or caps when outdoors.
  • Use Sunscreen: Apply a sunscreen specifically designed for the scalp to prevent sunburn and damage.

3. Hair Care Routine

  • Gentle Washing: Use a mild shampoo to wash your hair regularly to keep the scalp clean without over-drying.
  • Avoid Heat: Minimize the use of hair dryers, straighteners, and other heat styling tools that can damage hair.
  • Conditioning: Use a good conditioner to keep your hair moisturized and prevent it from becoming dry and brittle.

4. Stress Management

  • Relaxation Techniques: Engage in activities like yoga, meditation, or other relaxation techniques to reduce stress, which can contribute to hair loss.
  • Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get enough sleep to support overall health and reduce stress levels.

5. Avoid Harsh Treatments

  • Chemical Treatments: Avoid excessive use of hair dyes, perms, and other chemical treatments that can weaken hair.
  • Tight Hairstyles: Refrain from hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight ponytails or braids, which can cause traction alopecia.

6. Regular Scalp Care

  • Massage: Regular scalp massages can improve blood circulation to the hair follicles and promote hair growth.
  • Exfoliation: Use a gentle exfoliating scrub on the scalp to remove dead skin cells and keep the follicles clear.

7. Consider Supplements

  • Biotin and Other Supplements: Consider taking supplements like biotin, saw palmetto, or other hair growth supplements after consulting with a healthcare provider.
  • HR23+ Hair Restoration Supplement: Try Europe's leading non-medical hair supplement that has shown to be effective in nearly 9 out of 10 men. HR23+ is safe, and available without a prescription.

8. Consult a Professional

  • Dermatologist or Trichologist: If you notice significant hair loss, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist or trichologist to identify any underlying causes and receive personalized treatment.

9. Healthy Lifestyle Choices

  • No Smoking: Avoid smoking as it can impact blood circulation to the scalp and contribute to hair loss.
  • Exercise Regularly: Regular physical activity can improve overall health and reduce stress, which can indirectly benefit hair health.

10. Stay Cool and Comfortable

  • Humidity and Sweat: In hot and humid weather, sweat can accumulate on the scalp. Make sure to wash your hair more frequently and use products that control oil and sweat.

Implementing these tips can help maintain the health of your hair and potentially slow down the process of hair loss. If hair loss persists or worsens, professional advice from a healthcare provider is recommended.

MY HAIR LOSS PREVENTION PLAN: HOW TO STOP HAIR LOSS

hair loss prevention plan

For most men approaching 40, hair loss can be a real concern. Over 65% of men will experience some form of hair loss by the age of 40, and, without a cure, it's a problem that's not about to go away any time soon.

Now, just because there isn't a cure for baldness, it's not actually all doom and gloom, thankfully. There are ways in which baldness can be treated, resulting in a slowing down of hair fall, and stimulation of hair regrowth.

However, treating hair loss can be quite complicated, as results will always vary from person to person, so it is absolutely vital that you choose the right treatment plan that works for you, individually.

How To Stop Hair Loss

In this post, I'll go through five key products that I use in order to slow down my receding hairline. Now, thankfully, at 38, I still have a relatively good head of hair. My hair has lost some of its density since I hit my 30s, but not to the point where it really shows.

So, I've decided to try five products that I hope will help me slow down (and stop) my hair loss dead in its tracks. For the sake of my health, I have chosen to stay away from prescription drugs like finasteride. I know finasteride isn't guaranteed to give you those nasty side-effects, but even so, I don't want to risk it, and I don't particularly want to be putting drugs into my body.

1. Nizoral Shampoo (ketoconazole)

I started using Nizoral shampoo a few weeks ago in an attempt to treat my thinning hair with a formula that works deep into the scalp.

Nizoral contains ketoconazole, and while it is most frequently used for its antifungal properties to treat infections or conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, there is anecdotal evidence indicating that it may also help promote hair growth or reduce hair loss.

I use this shampoo up to two times a week. I apply a small amount, lather in well, leave in for around 5-6 minutes, and then wash out. I'm hoping that, when used in conjunction with my other four products, it will help halt my shedding, and stimulate hair growth.

2. Kirkland Minoxidil Foam 2%

Next up is a product that I've known about for years, but I never really felt the need to try. Minoxidil, more commonly branded as Regaine/Rogaine, is the only topical treatment for hair loss that is medically approved.

Minoxidil can help stop the hair loss in its tracks, and in some cases, it can even help regrow new hair. As my main area of hair loss is at the frontal hairline, I shall only be applying the minoxidil in and around that area of my scalp. I will be applying the minoxidil twice a day, once in the morning, and once at night. I have chosen to use the foam, rather than the liquid, because it dries instantly.

3. Micro-needling

While used as an anti-aging skin treatment, micro-needling may also be a method of treatment for hair loss. There's even evidence that it can help a special type of hair loss known as alopecia areata. The same process of creating wounds in the skin is also thought to regenerate the health of the hair follicles.

I've seen a bunch of guys on the internet trying the micro-needling technique on their heads, along with minoxidil, and the hair growth results have been quite extraordinary.

So, using the micro-needling device, the derma roller, in conjunction with the minoxidil, I am hoping to see some excellent hair regrowth in the coming weeks and months. I will be micro-needling just once a week, with a 1.5mm derma stamp. If you choose to go for a 0.5mm micro-needling device, then you may have to use it twice a week.

4. Multi-Vitamin Supplement

Multi-vitamin supplements are an absolutely vital part of a good hair care routine.  Multi-vitamin supplements can help prevent excess hair fall, and promote the healthy function of hair growth.

I use HR23+ hair supplement, which is one of the market leaders. Now, supplements and vitamins will not cure baldness, but they can offer a you a safe alternative to finasteride, so you won't ever have to compromise on your health and wellbeing.

I take four capsules daily.

5. Biotin & Collagen Shampoo

Finally, I use Biotin & Collagen shampoo by OGX. Shampoos do not treat hair loss to any great effect, but they do offer you a good health hair solution, particularly when used in conjunction with more potent treatments like minoxidil.

This shampoo lathers wonderfully well, and helps to thicken and strengthen the strands. If you're looking to get a bit of volume in your hair, then be sure to use this shampoo 2-3 times a week.

YOUR COMPLETE HAIR CARE GUIDE FOR SPRING SEASON

As men, our hair is most commonly our biggest asset. In fact, hair is the largest sector of the men's grooming industry. We spend more on our hair than on any other part of our body.

The thing is, as seasons change, so too does our hair. The way our hair grows depends on the season. We tend to experience different growth patterns at different times of the year.  The texture of the hair varies, and you also have to take into account other key factors, such as seasonal shedding.

So, to get the very best out of your hair during spring season, here's our complete guide. Follow these steps for bigger, stronger, and healthier hair...

Dont' wash your hair every day

Too many of us wash our hair far too often. There's simply no need for it. Spring tends to be a season where we typically shed more hair than normal, and so over-washing your hair can do more damage than good. Limit washing to twice orIf you have quite naturally thin hair, then avoid conditioners.

Dry your hair gently

Wet hair tends to be weaker and vulnerable to damage, so, avoid rubbing your hair after washing, as it will lead to excessive breakage, which you don't really want. Instead pat dry it to avoid stress on scalp, and avoid heavy rubbing and patting.

Keep thinning hair short

If you have thin hair, or are thinning, then be sure to keep your hair cropped in a tidy style. Growing your hair will only accentuate the problem. Short and tidy does the trick. Spring season is the perfect time to get a nice short cut look.

Use an egg based conditioner

Egg is loaded with proteins and essential minerals like sulphur and choline that your hair secretly craves for. Harness the goodness of egg by conditioning your hair regularly with egg yolk. Let the egg yolk penetrate deep into your scalp so as to strengthen your follicles from within. Protein is a vital attribute for strong hair growth, so your strands will appreciate the extra dosage during the season when we tend to lose the most hair.

Less is more

Using too much of hair gel, hair wax, hair spray or any other hair product can make your hair look unnatural and heavy. Use minimalistic amount of these products when it comes to styling your hair the right way. Your hair will benefit for less product, and be sure to go for naturally formulated styling products.

Use a stimulating shampoo

Hair thickening shampoos are becoming increasingly popular with men in their 30s and 40s. There are many to choose from, including caffeine base shampoos too. Some of the best ones include Head & Shoulders Endurance, Alpecin C1, and OGX Biotin & Collagen.

Wash, don’t repeat

An article on men’s hair care would not complete without clearing the myth about using a shampoo twice. Basically don’t get fooled by the television ads that tell wash, rinse and repeat. Washing your hair once is enough. But make sure you use right shampoo and conditioner (see previous tip).

Avoid heat styling products

Heat can be hugely damaging to your locks. Avoid using hair dryers for drying your hair. Let them dry naturally. Also, try and avoid hair straightens, as they can be massively damaging to your strands.
Trim it

Take cool showers

Avoid cold and hot showers. Cold showers actually blocks the blood capillaries in the scalp. These blood capillaries carry essential nutrients and need to be active for optimum effect. But this doesn’t mean you shower your hair under piping hot water. It will completely mess up your hair by pulling out all the natural oils from scalp. Ideally try and wash your hair with lukewarm water. That is the healthiest option, especially during the spring hair shedding season.

Be healthy

Your hair health is a reflection of your lifestyle. Hair care for men means you need to eat well, get plenty of exercise, drink water, get enough sleep and try to stay positive. It's no secret - the better you live and eat, the better chance you'll have of having great hair.

Take vitamins

Multi-vitamin hair supplements like Viviscal and HR23+ can help prevent hair shedding, as well as support healthy hair growth. These types of supplements contain all the vital nutrients and minerals your hair needs to thrive. They are also safe, risk-free, and a great alternative to chemically based drugs.
